As we gear up for the third week of school (can't believe it), it is important that we kick off the year strong! I spent some time last week looking over what reading level each child in our ended 1st grade on. I was so excited to see that over 75% of my class was reading on level or above! YAY! Our first visit to library had many Team Oberg kiddos asking for chapter books. I even had to pull out some chapter books for our classroom library (I usually don't switch over to these until after winter break). In class last week, we started talking about how being good readers makes us good writers and vice-versa and why it's important to read. Your child now knows that reading is a very important element of our classroom environment and we our building our silent reading stamina everyday (we are already up to nine minutes). Please, please, PLEASE make sure that your child is reading to themselves, to you, or to a sibling, for at least 10 minutes every night! As we get towards the end of September and the beginning of October, we will begin reading level assessments to find out your child's current reading level. I hope to see levels go up from where each child ended first grade on. I'll explain in more detail how this testing works in a couple weeks. Below are a few tips for you to help your child become a better reader at home. Asking questions during and after reading is very important when helping build comprehension skills. Also, I will send home this week our first Scholastic Book Club order and will send home a new one at the beginning of every month. I will give students some time at the end of the day to look through the catalog and circle any books that look interesting to them or that they would like. Please sit down with your child and discuss if they would like any books. You can choose from grade- and reading-level specific books for your child. Orders will always be due at the end of the month and the exact date will be located on the weekly newsletter. You can send in your order form and money in your child's TEAM Folder or order online. Every book you buy earns FREE books for our classroom library.
Order online here! --> https://orders.scholastic.com/LKNY2 September order is due no later than Friday, September 26, 2014.
